AST 1

The fundamentals of backcountry safety. If you’re new to the backcountry, or just want to advance your skills this intro level 2 day course is for you. Learn the basics of Avalanche formations, snow crystal id, avalanche path analysis, backcountry travel, group dynamics, weather 101, companion rescue and snow science.

AST 2
$750.00

The next step after the fundamentals of snow safety is the AST 2. This 4 day course will allow you to push yourself deeper in decision making skills in the backcountry. Allowing you to become a leader, learning to travel safely + confidently through avalanche terrain. This course will teach you how to build a route plan, manage the weather and the snowpack, have decisive decision making skills and be a pro at companion rescue.

Advanced backcountry refresher
$450.00

This course is designed for someone who is frequently in the backcountry, shredding big lines or getting after it but still feels like they are lacking on their rescue skills, and real life scenarios of rescue and triage management. This course will be an intensive two day course, with on snow rescue techniques that goes further than just companion rescue. Proper triage, first aid and packaging techniques. Learn to build a rescue toboggan, package someone up on snow and prevent situations going from bad to worse. This course would be perfect for a group of friends, or a film crew.

Decision making in Avalanche Terrain

This course is for people who have their AST 1, have spent at least one season in the backcountry, and want to improve their avalanche decision-making skills. If you can't afford or don't have time for AST 2 but often feel unsure about choices, route planning, or leading, this one-day course is for you. You'll spend the day learning how to lead trips, break trail, and make decisions, all with your guide’s support to boost your confidence.

Mountain Med / backcountry WAFA
